Angry birds attack odyssey!

This is about Pottikadai, not pottukadalai ;)
I had gone to odyssey to buy some ethnic books - books by Indian publishers with excellent ethnic illustrations. Of course, the useless store had nothing, but they had made room in their basement for showcasing Pottikadai.  And no, i don't mean the small mom and pop stores found in very part of chennai. I mean this.
They had a basket of Angry Bird Key Chains, big fat toys with a key ring attached.  I was wondering why this disproportionate size while extorting my angry bird crazy toddler to go for a sticker/pin/crayons.

I picked one and looked underneath, I could see some raincoat like material stuffed inside and couldn't pull it out easily.  I assume it would expand and contract like a bellow and dropped it back.

As I looked up from dropping the keychain, I noticed an angry bird bag hanging off the shelf.  Then it all clicked in place.  The stuffing inside the angry bird was a bag!  The bird also doubles as a coin purse!

Awesome no? One less excuse for forgetting to carry your own bag when you go shopping :)

Oh so u bought it! This is an improvised version of the compact shopping bags launched earlier. To encourage people to carry their own bags and not ask for plastic covers someone (NGO i think) launched bags that can be neatly folded into a really small size and stuffed into a very small bag that is easy to carry. You now find these in Witco as well

I was meandering through some of the foodblog links I follow on Sunday. Somehow I ended up in a silicon valley article about how cool Google is even down to the cafeteria facilities for its employees! Then I read about one of their chef's making Kombucha and what an awesome health drink it is. The cook in me had to find out how to do it right here in Chennai and I actually garnered a few email addresses in Bangalore, Hyd, Mumbai supplying the yeast bacteria mix for making the drink. I was hemming and hawing over when and who to write for the precious starter when I had to run to my favourite organic store - Econut in Besantnagar - to buy more dates for Gau. They had bottles of kombucha in their refrigerator! I rushed back home to see what this so called miracle food tastes like - a lil bit like highly diluted carbonated beer (or is all beer carbonated?). The vinegar adds a surprisingly fresh taste to the drink. Hubby loved it, I dont try such things on Gau.

A Sweet Tart with Chocolate and Pomegranete

One of the few masterchef desserts were the three of us agreed the dessert was drool worthy and MUST BE tried at home is the episode were Audra gets her Masterchef Apron.  This was No Grading On A Curve, this was absolute exemplar cooking.  Gary and George awarded her the Apron (top 24) Without tasting the rest of the participants food. Remember? She made a Dark Chocolate and Raspberry tart with cherry port jelly . Audra's Dark Chocolate Raspberry tart from Masterchef Season 4 She had actually forgotten milk and eggs when she went foraging and ended up inventing this dessert on the fly.  Totally awesome no?  I had bookmarked this recipe and promised my son I would make it.  Someday. Now most masterchef recipes, forgive me, have two main issues; They are not complete and they tend to go over the top in terms of time/ingredients/techniques.  I found Audra's recipe a tad excessive.  500g of chocolate in one Tart?  500g of butter too?  I agree it is the life in my years an

Soul Food

I may have spent close to a decade in Texas, but when I say soul food, I certainly don't mean Southern African American cooking.  I mean food for the soul, music. Now that I am sitting home alone most mornings, wading deep into my thesis, I spend quite a bit of time setting the tone of the hour with music. I love Susheela Raman's voice, especially in the song "Yeh Mera Deewana Pan Hai" .  Her voice has a blues-y touch reminding me of Billie Halliday, though, after I had started exploring her (Raman's) albums,  Ella Fitzgerald or actually Aretha Franklin may be a better fit.  Lady Day touches you with the depth of feeling in her voice, just like Susheela Raman in this particular song, somehow Mukesh, the original voice of this song, only manages to annoy.  (Mukesh does have a whiny voice doesn't he?
